Blueberry Bushes

Growing Information

Blueberry bushes are relatively easy to grow but they do require a few things to get them to prosper.

The first thing you need to find out would be the PH of your soil. The ideal PH would be 4.2 to 4.8 but it can run as high as 5.5 and still work alright. If the PH is to high you can add agriculture sulfer and if it is too low you can add lime. If you have to change the PH you might want to add your amendments the year before planting to give them time to work. If you use peat moss in the planting hole the bushes should be alright for the first year.

Blueberry bushes are going to need water. In dry times they should receive 1 inch a week in supplemental water. If you are getting regular rains then just add irrigation as needed. Blueberry bushes do not like swimming in water but the ground. should be moist.

We like to dig a hole 1 1/2 to 2 feet wide and at least 1 foot deep. Dig the hole deeper if you have a lot of clay to give the excess rain water somewhere to go and the blueberry bush is not standing in water.

When the hole is ready take your plant and make sure the root ball is broken up some. You can take a sharp knife and cut through the outer roots on all four sides . Make sure the bottom is cut also as well as the top ring of roots at the pot top.

OK now mix 1/2 peat moss and 1/2 soil together and use this to plant the blueberry bush in. You should fill the soil to maybe 1 inch above the nursery line to allow for settling. Cover the area with 3 to 4 inches of hardwood mulch or pine nettles or pine bark mulch. Water your plant in and in a couple of weeks add some fertilizer. You can use azalea fertilizer or something for roses. We use Nature Safe 8-5-5 which is an OMRI Listed organic fertilizer. A 2 year blueberry bush will need a couple of ounces to get started then another 2 ounces in six to 8 weeks.

The picture in the corner shows a 1 year and 2 year bush. 1 year blueberry bushes are about 12-16 inches tall. 2 year blueberry bushes are about 18 to 24 inches tall. Rooted cuttings are about 4 to 6 inches tall.

We carry several different varieties including Duke, Bluecrop, Blueray, Collins, Reka, Patriot, Northland, Little Giant and Jersey.
